The human ear is a vertebrate organ. It collects and senses sounds, as well as maintaining equilibrium. The ear is divided into three components: the outer ear; the middle ear and the inner ear.
The external Pinna section of the outer ear collects sound waves and channels them via the Meatus (auditory ear canal) to the Tympanic Membrane (eardrum). It also serves to protect the eardrum.
The Tympanic Cavity (middle ear) contains three tiny bones: Malleaus (hammer); Incus (anvil) and Stapes (stirrup). These link the eardrum to the cochlea and transmit sound wave energy as vibrations to the cochlea.
