The process of machining a vehicle alternator end casting was creating a 104 dB(A) noise. Excited by cutting forces, the resonant vibration of the casting caused the noise, which radiated and was heard as a high pitched ‘squeal’.
A partial attempt had been made to screen the machine but the acoustic barrier had been cut back by the operator to allow better access and was largely ineffective.

The solution was to dampen the cast alternator part itself prior to machining. A pair of inexpensive straps were fitted around the part by the operator and machining then commenced.
An overall reduction of 16dB(A) was achieved, plus a reduction of 30dB(A) in the frequency heard as squealing.
Extra benefits were that the machining time and finish quality were both also improved! The cost of this solution was just £40 and was in fact, tested with an ordinary rubber bungee strap.
